How to apply a liquid temporary colour.
Analyse the hair and scalp for porosity, elasticity, Texture, density, length and scalp conditions. Extremely porous hair may ‘grab’ the colour.
Make sure the scalp is free of scratches or other conditions. Assess the client’s base shade and reflect colour as these will help determine colour choice.
Consult your client to identify colour choice. As the professional, give your recommendations. Remember that temporary colour results are subtle and give slight tonal change.
Prepare your client for the colour service, using a neck-wrap and cape. Make sure the cape doesn’t touch the neck.
Read your manufacturer’s instructions.
Check to see if an allergy patch test is required. If required, record the results on the client’s record card.
Hair is usually shampooed before the application of a liquid temporary colour.
Comb the hair through from roots to ends with a wide tooth comb.
Place another neck-wrap or rubber mat over the cape to protect the client from drips.
Protect yourself with gloves and an apron.
Start applying at the front.
Separate the hair with your fingers.
Ask your client to tilt their head back and apply the colour to the roots.
Use your thumb to massage and distribute the colour and control the colour as it leaves the bottle.
Continue sectioning with your fingers, using your thumb to control the colour placement.
Move to the back of the head.
Apply an even amount of colour through each section.
You need enough colour to give even coverage but not so much that it runs everywhere.
Once you’ve applied to the entire head, use a wide tooth comb to comb the colour through. This will help to distribute the colour evenly and encourages an even colour result.
Check the hairline for coverage.
Use a towel to remove any colour on the skin.
Prepare the client for the next service.
Gently towel blot, apply styling product and dry the hair.
The finished result is a temporary colour with a soft reflect.
Advise your client that the temporary colour will wash out when shampooed next (unless hair is over-porous), to be aware of possible dis-coloration of items such as light coloured collars, pillow slips and towels, the recommended home hair care products and general hair maintenance.
The client record card needs to be filled in with the type and shade of colour used, how it was applied, the result, home hair care recommendations and advice given.
